The Power of Prayer (an excerpt from The Well of Nashville)
By Leann Albrecht
Prayer is simply conversation with God.
Ephesians 6:18 At all times, pray by the power of the Spirit. Pray all kinds of prayers. Be watchful, so that you can pray. Always keep on praying for all of God’s people.
The Apostle Paul taught in great depth about ALL KINDS of prayer. There is a time to pray with our understanding; with our mind – being led by the Holy Spirit. However, there are also times to pray in the Spirit – being led by the Holy Spirit; a time when our mind does not necessarily comprehend what we are praying because we are engaging the language of the Spirit which is not a language known to our mind.
I Corinthians 14: 15 So what does this mean? It means that I will pray with my spirit, AND I will pray with my mind. I will sing psalms with my spirit, AND I will sing psalms with my mind. Here the word AND is being spotlighted because both kinds of prayers are desirable.
Our English language and our minds are limited. So as we pray in the cognitive realm, we often pray through our own lens of experience and knowledge, which can limit our ability to express prayer in depth. Many times we think too small and pray too small. Conversely, when we pray in the Spirit, we go beyond our mind and allow the Spirit of God to pray through us. His infinite insight, wisdom, knowledge and understanding are perfect, precise and always right. We can trust the Spirit to pray accurately and thoroughly concerning a matter.
When I pray in the Spirit, many times I may or may not know what the Spirit is praying through me. As I open my mouth to pray, I submit my tongue to the Holy Spirit to pray as He desires. The same is true when I sing. I may or may not fully understand what the Spirit is singing through me. But I trust Him in it.
This video is an account of what happened to me one morning as I was praying in the Spirit. He opened my eyes to see exactly what was happening as I prayed. It was so encouraging for me to see and understand the power of praying in the Spirit and what was happening as I prayed.
This gift is not just for “special” or “chosen” people. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is for everyone who asks for it. You can read Paul’s account of baptism of water and the Spirit in Acts 19. It’s available for all of us today!!
The Apostle Paul finishes by saying in I Corinthians, 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. It was a “tool” of the Spirit that He deemed valuable and powerful in his walk with the Lord and wanted us to have access to the Kingdom of God, through prayer, as he did.
Wow! Just listened to this for the first time since the night you shared…it is powerful, and, again has encouraged to me…we are set apart for kingdom assignments and the tools are inexhaustible! Thank you, for being bold to, “lay it out there,” just as He revealed these things to you! Training to reign! Awesome!
I agree. This is so true. Thank you for sharing, Leann & Linda, too.
